Technological advances are becoming out of this world so fast. Sometimes, I can't quite keep up to date with even the basic stuff haha. I've just been introduced to the world of VR (virtual reality) through my friend who brought a very affordable foam cardboard VR headset to Manila! I used to see images of Google goggles and Google cardboard only on social media and now, one can now find a simpler version of a lightweight DIY virtual reality headset for sale here in the Philippines through the Long Live Play PH store. Some of the available free apps in the market are very entertaining. After a long and taxing month (and without a plan to head outside due to the intense heat), I found myself tinkering with smartphones to have a very exploratory 3D experience at home. I VRed all my April stress and troubles away LOL. I also got with me the smallest bluetooth controller (in the world?) which can be paired to play some VR games (or navigate some apps) and my favorite feature is the shutter control for my camera ;) Check out my silly side below haha. Warning: You can easily spend lots of hours immersed in your own bubble with this one while your friends laugh at you if you only have one unit haha. It's pretty lightweight since it's mostly made of foam and magnets.
The best fit would be bigger phones like the size of J's Samsung S3. The mobile device will be held in place by mini suction cups.
The garterized head part attached to the box is adjustable via velcro.

You get to relax like this if you choose more laid back apps (to be downloaded first in your Android or iPhone).
The LLP store also carries a very small bluetooth controller that you can pair to play VR games. The controller costs P1000 and can do around 20 hours of playtime per full charge (via micro USB).
Aside from reliving our family computer days, this nifty little gismo can also serve as a remote shutter for the camera phone in one click!
Do check out Long Live Play PH's interesting product line for gamers and geeks hehe. Check out the flight simulator!! At first I was like this navigating through the app Peronio. It's a VR pop-up adventure book with stories and games! It's a pretty interesting and kiddie thing to do. Haha.
The next app Cleanopolis is about climate change. I think it's an interesting way to learn about the effects of what we do to the environment and some of the things we can do. That's me trying hard to pick fruits in season to put in my basket haha. All that twisting and silly turning of heads is hard to capture via photo and I am still thinking about posting my video so this will do haha.
Essentially without the VR glasses, you can see this split screen on your smartphone for VR apps. You can actually VR-fy lots of things like panoramic photos using the application Cardboard Camera. So when you put the DIY VR headset and center it properly, you'll see the images come to life as one screen. It feels like this is all just a part of your head for me ;) Some applications of VR include unlimited roller coaster rides (hehe), space exploration, underwater and deep sea diving, driving and racing (I really fail at this one haha) and going abroad (or pre-check the location) when you can't physically go there or just when you're planning your trip!
One of the things that also look promising are organizing and coordination games like the Filipino developed Little Herder VR. And of course, apps that will make you fitter and jump around or rescue something hehe. I would suggest you clearing the space around you first and have somebody there to watch out for you so that you don't bump into things or have an accident ;) It's easy to get lost exploring this virtual reality world. Which reminds me... Did you know there's such a thing as YouTube 360 that you can use the goggles with?
