Honestly, before my trip to Korea for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, all I knew about the games were figure skating and ice hockey. A brief stop at the Daegwallyeong Ski History Museum and the Alpensia Ski Jump site was a great start to expand my knowledge and curiosity about sports and Korea in the olden times.
We stopped at the Alpensia ski museum on our way to the jumping center. Entrance is free.
Daegwallyeong of Pyeongchang is located at the highest altitude in Korea and they said that skiing and winter sports in this country started here. It was the favorite destination of skiers until the Yongpyong Ski Resort was opened in the 70s.
Prehistoric sleds, tools, snow shoes and skis for hunting and transportation in the mountains are displayed here.
There were photos of the early ski slopes in Korea and the first competition took place in the 50s.
And then, I found out about the biathlon.. It combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting! It's an Olympic sport too! There's a Paralympic version too!
And apparently, there are different types of skis..
This area also has slopes in wintertime and looks like this without snow!
We then went up the 90m tall ski jump lounge for the views of Alpensia (via car or cable car).
There's a restricted area here for the athletes in their high-speed gear. No poles and all..
Athletes must descend this ramp and just take off with as much power as they can and fly as far as possible..
I believe that this is one of the most interesting and maybe heart-stopping games in the Olympics.. One that you might want to see live!
